Your children

Sep 26, 2008

I have three amazing children. Got thinking this morning while I was journalling. It hit me like a bucket of COLD water. When my kids are reflecting on my life after I pass what will they think of me, my life, goals, accomplishments, how I chose to treat people?

So I wrote a list of the qualities that I would love them to say when asked… “What was your dad like?”

Even if you don’t have children you can benefit from the exercise. Picture you have lived a full life and your future children are sitting around having a coffee with a reporter. The question is “Tell me about your dad/mom, how did they live? What did they teach you?”

Take the time to write this list in your journal and share your list here on the STUpendous BLOG!

Here is something else to think about when you finish the list. What if it all ended tomorrow? What would they say now? Don’t wait to create the life that you want to live! Don’t wait to treat people with kindness, love and respect! Don’t wait to care about a cause bigger then yourself. Don’t wait to get up and see the sunrise, play in a puddle or work harder at something you love! Don’t wait!!

I absolutely love this question. I feel like it puts my life back on track, after I have strayed away from it.
I want my children to say that they learned from me. I want them to say that I was kind, generous, very loving, gentle, funny, exciting, unselfish, and qualities like that. But I think more importantly I would rather hear them telling the reporter stories of travelling the globe, trying new things, and I most want to hear that they never felt ignored, betrayed, or unloved. That no matter what I always made time for them, I never let life get in the way, and that when they needed some space I gave it to them, but they knew that I was always in their back corner, giving them the little pushes they needed.
I want my kids to see me as a mom, and that everything I did, I did to make their world better, because I truly believe that is the goal of a parent, and if my kids think that they were the most important people in my life, then I have fulfilled every dream that matters.

Agreed, totally in love with this question.....i hope they would say:

loving, devoted, generous, hardworking, determined, humble, strong, motivating, good mom, trusting and trustworthy, a good friend.

hopefully those are some of the things that come to mind.

I hope my kids would say that I was someone to look up to, easy to get along with, loving, caring, dedicated, a good friend and a great mom. smile

I hope my kids see me as someone they grew up with.  Someone who taught them the value of a dollar through hard work, but in the end, that a dollar is just a dollar, and other things are worth so much more.  I want to be a consistent role model for them, by showing them it’s okay to make mistakes, as long as you learn from them.

More than anything else, I hope my kids see me as somebody they can approach at any point in their lives for anything they need.
I want my kids to see me as not just a father, but a dad.
