Mark Black
Workshop Presenter
Mark Black is a man with a very unique story. Born in Moncton, Mark suffered from a rare congenital heart disease, and on his second day of life was flown to the IWK Children’s Hospital for emergency open-heart surgery. After undergoing another surgery a year later, Mark was discharged from hospital with the warning that he was not out of the woods yet.
In May of 2000, Mark received his BA in English from Mount Allison University and in September, began an Education degree at UNB when his illness forced him to put his education on hold. After evaluation by his cardiologist Mark was listed for a risky heart and double lung transplant.
For ten months Mark rode an emotional roller-coaster waiting for a transplant, knowing that if organs did not become available soon he would die. While the doctors had little hope, Mark was confident that he would survive. He was motivated to work hard, endure the pain, and overcome the odds. Finally on September 7th, 2002 Mark received his life-saving gift.
After his surgery, Mark wasted no time in getting back into fighting shape. Running and working-out daily Mark fought to get his fitness back. He has now completed three half marathons and three full marathons completing the 42 km distance in a hurricaine one year, and 32 degree heat the next.
Mark now runs his own speaking and consulting firm, traveling the country helping people unleash their powerful potential. His new book, “Live Life from the Heart” has sold 400 copies in it’s first 3 months.
