Programs
Initiative Explorer
Grades: 7th, 8th
The Initiative Explorer program is the first level of our Initiative based programs at YLCC. It is an introduction to experiential leadership. Through interaction with nature and the group, the Initiative Explorer program is a journey of self-growth through fun interaction.
Campers maximize their learning by having an open mind to new concepts and new risks. They will enjoy a major part of the Initiative Explorers’ LEADERSHIP section which is a series of “Survivor” like challenges.
The Explorer program is one of the most interactive and fun programs at YLCC. To pass the Initiative Explorers program, campers are encouraged to complete 8 out of 10 LEADERSHIP components.
The Components Are:
- Trust Building - Explorers must learn to trust their fellow campers to complete a number of the tasks that they will face during their session.
- Rope Dynamic Basics - Initiative Explorer campers will also have the opportunity to learn the basics of knot tying, high rope safety and rope instruction.
- Spotting and Support Development - Campers, as part of their low and high rope usage will be learn the important skill of support. These are not only relevant to the basics of high ropes, low ropes and rock climbing, but within the family, school friends, sports and the work place.
- Full Value Contract - Taking responsibility for their choices and decisions on a daily basis. Making campers accountable for their challenges and their successes.
- Initiative Tasks - At YLCC we try and teach each Initiative Explorer camper the value of problem solving. Each camper will learn how to solve problems in a positive and constructive way!
- Team Building - The Initiative Explorers will be forced to work together to accomplish many goals. With out the team success concepts they will not succeed in their week long task.
- Communication - Building on our Alpha programs, communication skills are a focus of all initiative programs.
- Group Dynamics - Learn about the concept of group dynamics, why do some groups or teams succeed while others fail.
- Defining Leadership - As campers experience their sessions they will also learn the value of recording their activities and feelings. Through this task campers will start to define themselves and what is important to them.
- Prime Directives - These are the core components to every program we run at YLCC. Campers will learn more about them in the initiatives programs.
